Wyckham Blackwell were appointed by Countryside Properties to complete the full design, manufacture, supply, and installation of the structural timber roof carcass for the Assisted Living Apartments Project at Elderswell Retirement Village in Turvey.

The Project was comprised of 10 apartment blocks, carefully designed to complement the existing development and reflect the character of the surrounding historic village properties. The first four blocks are now complete, with installation progressing now across the remainder of the scheme.

Architecturally, the project presented a complex and varied roofscape. The buildings incorporate multiple stepped eaves levels, varying ridge heights, hips, valleys, flat roofs and dormer windows, all designed to tie in aesthetically with Phase 1 of the Care Village. Achieving this traditional appearance required highly considered and detailed timber engineering solutions.

Our in-house design team developed a comprehensive Roof Truss package including duo pitch and mono pitch raised collar trusses with sloping ceilings, girder trusses to accommodate dormer window openings, hip and valley trusses, fire break spandrel panels, flat roof trusses and two-part top hat trusses. The structural design also accounted for significant level changes of up to 1000mm across the roof structures.

Further technical challenges included coordinating trusses supported by both masonry and steel beams, ensuring all dormer apertures and roof lights were accurately formed, and aligning flat roofs, eyebrow dormers, valleys and hips precisely throughout the development.

With Wyckham Blackwell responsible for the installation of the roof structures, careful planning and coordination were critical. Our design & Installation team provided detailed level information for wall plates, fire break panels and steel beams, identified scaffold requirements and liaised closely with bricklayers, scaffolders and roofing contractors. This proactive collaboration ensured programme continuity and minimised delays on site.
